Melissa Ferrick

Saturday, October 4, 2014
Doors 7:00PM, Showtime 8:00PM

Melissa Ferrick is back by popular demand, and will be putting on a fantastic concert on Saturday, October 4.
More Info >
On her first self-produced album since 2004, Melissa Ferrick takes us through the ending of one relationship and into the early stages of another. It's a candid record that she sets to a sweeping Americana/alt-country soundtrack, layering pedal steel guitars and background harmonies into some of the lushest, brightest songs of her 20-year career Ferrick's life has always been an open book. Signed to Atlantic Records in the mid-'90s, she helped represent a new wave of alt-rock females-- including artists like Liz Phair, PJ Harvey and college-mate Paula Cole-- who sang about adult womanhood with sharp, unchecked honesty. Morrissey proved an early champion when he personally invited her to tour as his opening act, and Ferrick eventually went on to found her own label and release a number of albums in which she played every instrument herself. Her life took dips and turns along the way, and she chronicled every detail in her songwriting. On her newest album on MPress Records, the truth is, Ferrick opens up the studio doors to several outsiders, including Grammy-Award-winning mixer- and former Daniel Lanois apprentice- Trina Shoemaker (Brandi Carlile, Sheryl Crow), engineer Rafi Sofer (James Taylor, Juliana Hatfield) and a full band. The result is a raw, rootsy record about the ups and downs- but mostly the ups- of life and love.

Bodeans

Sunday, October 5, 2014
Doors 5:00PM, Showtime 6:00PM

Ive always thought of the BoDeans as a truly American band, says Kurt Neumann, the founder, primary writer and frontman of the veteran Milwaukee-based group. We were blue-collar kids straight out of the heartlandhow could we be anything else? Roots rock was a label I fought when I was younger, but I came to realize that if by roots you meant blues, rock, country and soul all slammed together into one sound, then Id say yesthat is the sound of American-made music.
More Info >
Neumann fully embraces that notion on American Made, the BoDeans eleventh album. Its dozen songs are laced through with strands of indigenous roots elementsHeartland hoedown folk (American, with guest Jake Owen spinning out the guitar solo), Celtic-rooted mountain music (Walk Through This World, Flyaway), zydeco (Everything You Wanted), Southern roadhouse soul (Dont Bring Me Down), Chicago blues (Shake the Fever) and 100-proof roots rock (All the World). These tracks are played with heartfelt emotion as well as jaw-dropping skillfulness by the bandNeumann on vocals and guitars, original member Michael Ramos (Patty Griffin, John Mellencamp) on keyboards and accordion, longtime BoDeans bassist Ryan Bowman and new member Warren Hood, a fiddle/violin virtuoso from Austin.
As it turns out, the album title bears a thematic resonance as well as a stylistic one. With American Made, the BoDeans have created a soul-stirring song cycle that directly reflects the American experience at this critical moment in our history. The albumwhich also includes a powerful rendition of Bruce Springsteens Im on Firewas inspired by Neumanns blue-collar upbringing and his desire to express what a great country America remains, despite its troubles and the challenges facing it today.
As weve moved into the new millennium, weve begun to question our identity as Americanswho we are, or who we want to be, says Neumann. With the onset of the Tea party and the Occupy movement, it feels like were pulling in two very different directions. The song American talks about this land of endless possibility, and Where else in the world you ever gonna find this kind of ideology? Were lucky to have the rights and opportunities that we have, but I believe those rights come with a responsibility to help each other along. Its wrong to stockpile millions or billions of dollars while all your neighbors struggle to survive. It feels like were losing the common sense that has always guided us, and that worries me. Were so out of touch with each otherand just trying to find an American-made product has become almost comical. I wanted to bring that all of that to the surfacehence the album title.

Carlene Carter

Sunday, October 19, 2014
Doors 5:00PM, Showtime 6:00PM

Carlene Carter is a Country music singer and songwriter. She is the daughter of June Carter Cash and Carl Smith. She will be making her New Hope Winery debut on Sunday, October 19.
More Info >
With Carter Girl, Carlene Carter once and for all proclaims who she is. Her first album for Rounder, it features songs spanning the Carter Family generations, including celebrated Carter Family songs like Gold Watch And Chain, and others written and performed by the descendants of the original Carter trioincluding Carlene herself. Not that shes ever shied away from being the heiress to the legacy of country musics foremost family. I always include at least one Carter Family song, or one written in the Carter Family spirit, says Carlene, citing as a pertinent example Spider Lace, which appeared on her deeply personal last album, Stronger (2008). I wrote it thinking of the Carter Familys flowery lyrics and romantic themes, she says, noting, too, that the Carter Family catalog is heavy both on songs of faith and far darker fare. Turning to Carter Girl, she notes that all these facets of the Carter Familys pioneering work which are reflected in a stunning album achievement that honors her ancestors while confirming her proud place among them. She is, of course, the daughter of 1950s country superstar Carl Smith, and June Carter Cash, who was herself the daughter of Maybelle CarterMother Maybelle Carter of the original Carter Family trio that formed in 1927 in the tiny Southwest Virginia hamlet of Maces Springs. Along with Mother Maybelles brother-in-law, A. P. Carter, and his wife and her cousin Sara, the Carter Family recorded such seminal country music songs as "Can The Circle Be Unbroken (By And By)," "Wildwood Flower" and "Keep On The Sunny Side, and forever influenced the development of bluegrass, folk, pop, gospel and rock music genres, as well as country music. Mother Maybelle Carter and her daughters June, Helen and Anita, later performed as Mother Maybelle & the Carter Sisters, and after Maybelles passing, as The Carter Family, of which Carlene was a part for a time in the late 80s. But with the 1978 release of her self-titled debut album, Carlene Carter established herself on the edgier end of the country music spectrum, having recorded it in England with Graham Parkers band The Rumour. ROUNDER RECORDS ARTIST BIO Rounder Records, One Rounder Way, Burlington, Massachusetts 01803 617-218-4495 - fax 617-354-4840 - www.rounder.com Two years later, with her acclaimed third album Musical Shapes, she covered Johnny Cashs classic Ring Of Fire, which her mother co-wrote for her future husband, and A.P. Carters Foggy Mountain Top, while co-writing Appalachian Eyes, a beautiful song suggesting in tone the music and region of her ancestry. She had her biggest hits in the 90s, with Every Little Thing and I Fell In Love both reaching No. 3. The latter was the title track of an album that also included Me And The Wildwood Rose, a song that she wrote about being a Carter girl, which she most fittingly revives on Carter Girl. I wanted to write a song about what it was like being a little Carter girl, and how me and my sister Rosey grew up and would travel to shows in the back seat of a car when we werent in school, and then get pulled on stage way before we were ready! Carlene recalls. But when I sing it now I get emotional because I think of all of them, and theyre all goneincluding Rosey. So it is with a strong sense of responsibility and commitment that she selected the songs for Carter Girl, as well as the creative team needed to fully realize her vision. The songs were chosen to represent all who came before. I wanted to show the progression of the songwriting and singing through the Carter Family generations, Carlene explains. So besides several A.P. Carter compositions (including Gold Watch And Chain), she includes Helen Carters Poor Old Heartsick Me (one of Carlenes favorites since childhood), the Carter Familys lovely Ill Be All Smiles (because of the memory of her Aunt Nita singing it and harmonizing so beautifully with the other Carter girls) and her mothers Tall Lover Man. Its one of Mamas murder mayhem songs, from [her Grammy-winning 1999 album] Press On, Carlene says. Its pretty dark in content, and very Carter Family-esque: So many of their songs involve cheating and killing the guyor praying to Him, since maybe 75 percent of their songs were religious or faith-bound. So she put her self-ascribed Carlene rhythm on ither version of her grandmothers famed Carter scratch acoustic guitar-picking techniqueto give it more drive. For her grandmothers Troublesome Waters, which Mother Maybelle co-wrote with her husband Ezra Carter and Tom T. Halls wife Dixie Hall, Carlene enlisted duet partner Willie Nelson, one of the only people still living who was very close to my father, my mom, my grandma, aunts, Johneverybody. I wanted to have some people on the album who were close to my family. Kris Kristofferson, who was also very close to Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Cash, duets with Carlene on A.P. Carters Blackjack David. Vince Gill harmonizes on her adaptation of the Carter Familys Lonesome Valley (Carlenes Lonesome Valley 2003 evokes the passing of her mother and stepfather), and Carlenes adopted sister Elizabeth Cook joins her on the Carter Familys Blackies Gunman. And on A.P. Carters I Aint Gonna Work Tomorrow, The Carter Sisters, Johnny Cash, and the acoustic guitar of the late Cowboy Jack Clement appear on a backing track that was recorded for an album that was released only on cassette and vinyl during the time that Carlene was working with the Carter Family. Carter Girl was produced by Don Was. I knew that he would bring the right people to play on it, says Carlene. I really believe in the power of the universe, and because this particular record had such heart value in it for me in carrying on the Carter Family legacy, I needed it to be the best it could be. Don was the right man for the job. After studying the massive In The Shadow Of Clinch Mountain box set of over 300 Carter Family recordings (the bible of the Carter Family!), Carlene chose songs that resonated personally. Wed go into the studio and play them the way I learned them, and the guys found an extra edge and brought them more up-to-date, she says. I had to really challenge myself to do it, and listened for hours on end and practiced for about a year to play the way Grandma did. The result is an album that has been in my brain my entire career, says Carlene. Im responsible for carrying on the legacy of the family and being a Carter girl, she concludes. Thats why I chose the album title. And I believe Ive pretty much accomplished that with Carter Girl, and for that Im really proud.

Suzanne Vega

Thursday, November 6, 2014
Doors 7:00PM, Showtime 8:00PM

Widely regarded as one of the most brilliant songwriters of her generation, (Biography Magazine) Suzanne Vega emerged as a leading figure of the folk-music revival of the early 1980s when, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, she sang what has been labeled contemporary folk or neo-folk songs of her own creation in Greenwich Village clubs. Since the release of her self-titled, critically acclaimed 1985 debut album, she has given sold-out concerts in many of the worlds best-known halls. In performances devoid of outward drama that nevertheless convey deep emotion, Vega sings in a distinctive, clear vibrato-less voice that has been described as a cool, dry sandpaper- brushed near-whisper and as plaintive but disarmingly powerful.

TUSK - The Ultimate Fleetwood Mac Tribute
Friday Show

Doors 7:00PM, Showtime 8:00PM

TUSK has performed at the Winery numerous times, and never fails to live up to their moniker of THE Premier Fleetwood Mac Tribute. If you have never seen them before, now is the time to experience this phenomenal band.
More Info >
"TUSK covers all the great hits of Fleetwood Mac, which has featured the talents of Mick Fleetwood, Christine and John McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks and others over the years. The Fleetwood Mac story is an episodic saga that spans more than 30 years. It is the saga of a British blues band formed in 1967 that became a California-based pop group in the mid-Seventies. In between came a period where Fleetwood Mac shuffled personnel and experimented with styles, all the while releasing solid albums with chart topping hits such as Landslide, Rhiannon, Go Your Own Way, Dont Stop, Dreams, Say You Love Me, Hold Me and many others. The five seasoned, well-respected musicians comprising TUSK have been making music together in various combinations and styles, in original outfits and in cover bands, for over twenty-five years. It seemed only fitting that they should come together to form the Ultimate Fleetwood Mac Tribute, and pay homage to a group that dominated the charts during the band members formative years. Fronted by solo artists Kathy Phillips (vocals) and Scott McDonald (guitar, vocals), and supported by veteran musicians Kim Williams (keys, vocals), Randy Artiglere (bass) and Tom Nelson (drums), TUSK takes its audience members on a sweet ride down memory lane. Authentic-sounding and always respectful, TUSK leaves no stone unturned in replicating the sounds of one of the worlds best-loved, top-selling bands."
